A picture book favourite, this is the dramatic and moving Cornish tale of a cat and a fisherman who brave the stormy seas to save their village.
This is the stunningly illustrated story of the seaside village of Mousehole Cornwall, where Mowzer the cat lives happily with old fisherman Tom – Tom who rocks the rocking chair just right, and catches fresh fish for dinner every night. Their life is a happy one – until one terrible winter, the Great Storm-Cat comes clawing and snarling and leaping at the harbour walls, so that no boat can go out to sea to fish. Soon, with Christmas coming, there is no food left in Mousehole. It is then that Mowzer and Tom set out to brave the fury of the waves together, and discover that it might just need a cat’s perspective to understand – and tame – the ferocious ways of the Great Storm-Cat sea… Gently yet powerfully told, this incredibly moving story of bravery, sacrifice and companionship inspired by Cornish legend is sure to connect with readers of all ages, new and old alike.
The cat was called Mowzer and she lived in a cottage near a harbour called the mousehole, because it was so small, with Tom, a fisherman. Every day they ate a different type of fish. Then the storm cat came and stopped all the boats from fishing and everyone was hungry. So Tom and mowzer braved the storm cat, mower sang to it so they were able to catch some fish for everyone.
I love this book. My Mummy read this to me since I was a baby. I love the Great Storm Cat, how it is a cat and not just a storm. I also like Mowzer and her love for all her favourite foods and her old friend Tom.
This was a fantastic book and I especially liked the ending.
The book was really good and I found it really exited when it came to the bit where the town was starving cause I knew they would face it and it would come to a happy ending.
I thought this was a very interesting book because it is a real life story
I really like this book. My favourite character is Mowzer because she tamed the storm cat.
The storm bit was a little bit scary, but I really liked that Mowzer saved the day
It’s a factual story. The thing that interested me were the main characters. Tom and the cat were very brave to fight against the stormy sea. I recommend this book to brave children who loved sea.
This was a lovely book to read. I enjoyed following the story of the cat. My Nanny bought this back from Mousehole in Cornwall where she went on holiday.
A poetic retelling of the story of Tom Bawcock, who sails into the storm to bring back fish for the starving villagers of Mousehole. Antonia Barber has chosen each word with great care; her love of language and the mastery of effect combine to leave a lasting memory. Nicola Bayley is also on top form as she conjures cloud and sea into the form of the Great Storm-Cat. Thoroughly recommended.
I liked the storm cat because it was amazing how it was on the sea.
This book is about a fisherman called Tom and his cat called Mowzer. They go on a daring adventure to get fish for all of the villagers and fare the Great Storm Cat.
